NABH Accreditation


NABH is an acronym for National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers is a constituent board of Quality Council of India (QCI), set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organizations. NABH was established in year 2006.

NABH is equivalent to JCI and other International standards including HAS: Haute Autorite de Sante, Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, the Japan Council for Quality in Health Care, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance in the United States. Its standards have been accredited by ISQUA the apex body accrediting the accreditators hence making NABH accreditation at par with the worlds most leading hospital accreditations

About the standards

NABH Standards contains 10 chapters,100 standards and 503 objective elements.
To comply with these standard elements, the hospital will need to have a process-driven approach in all aspects of hospital activities – from registration, admission, pre-surgery, pri-surgery and post-surgery protocols, discharge from the hospital to follow-up with the hospital after discharge. Not only the clinical aspects but the governance aspects are to process driven based on clear and transparent policies and protocols. In a nutshell NABH aims at streamlining the entire operations of a hospital.

Standards and Objective Elements for evaluation have been set in the following 10 areas, specifying the clear intent of the standards :

  • Patient Centered Standard.
  • Access, Assessment and Continuity of Care (ACC)
  • Care of Patient (COP) 
  • Management of Medication (MOM)
  • Patient rights and Education (PRE)
  • Hospital Infection Control (HIC)
  • Organization Centered Standards
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
  • Responsibilities of Management (ROM)
  • Facility Management and Safety (FMS)
  • Human Resource Management (HRM)
  • Information Management System (IMS)

Steps for NABH accreditation

   International Linkage
  • NABH is an Institutional Member as well as a Board member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (lSQua).
  • NABH is a member of the Accreditation Council of International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). 
  • NABH is on board of Asian Society for Quality in Healthcare (ASQua).

Minimum Requirements for NABH accreditation

  • This new standard facilitates the hospital in demonstrating commitment to safety and quality of care.
  • To get accredited, hospital should comply with the following other reference standards like IS 12483, 10905 for requirement for hospital building. (30 beds –100 beds).
  • Hospital capable of conforming to legal requirements like
    • Building permit
    • NOC for Chief Fire Officer
    • License under bio-medical management and handling rule 1998
    • NOC under pollution control board
    • Radiation protection certification in respect of all X-ray from BARC
    • Narcotic and psychotropic substance act.
    • Permit to operate lift, etc.
  • Qualified Lab in-charge should be available (Pathologist, microbiologist, bio-chemist).
  • Established Quality assurance program as per ISO 15189 – medical laboratories. 
  • Qualified technician for performing investigation in imaging services as per AERB guideline.
  • Well established Hospital information System
  • Medical gases usage compliance with legal requirements Indian explosive act 1884, gas cylinder rule 1981
  • Well-established sterilization unit to take care of sterile supplies to OT, ICU, Wards to address the Hospital infection control measures.
  • Medical record maintenance as per code of medical ethics 2002.
